Ministry of Interior continues to take security measures on land and at sea in order not to make Turkey a target for illegal migrants who want to cross into Europe.
In the first eight months of 2019, the number of irregular migrants apprehended, compared to the same period of the last year increased by 42 percent and rose from 158 thousand to 235 thousand. Law enforcement units also did not allow migrants who tried to cross into Europe through Edirne. In Edirne, arrestments were increased by 70 percent in the first 8 months of 2019 compared to the same period last year.
Due to internal disturbance in their countries, war and economic reasons, there has been an increase in the number of migrants who want to cross illegally into European countries recently.
Ministry of Interior General Directorate of Security, General Commandership of Gendarmerie and Coast Guard Command maximized the security measures in order not to make Turkey a route for the irregular migrants. The number of the arrestments of irregular migrants who have been trying to cross into Europe by land illegally in 2019 are decreasing substantially, because of these measures taken. While in the first eight months of 2018 the number of the irregular migrants who have crossed into the European Union by land were 10 thousand, in the same period of 2019 the number has been decreased to 4 thousand. The number of the irregular migrants who have been trying to cross into the European Union by sea have increased insignificantly. While it was 18 thousand in the first eight months of 2018, it has reached to 24 thousand in 2019.
Edirne, in which one out of every three illegal migrants are arrested, has become the most affected province by illegal crossing attempts to Europe. In 2019, 68 thousand out of 235 thousand irregular migrants apprehended in Turkey were arrested in Edirne. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our law enforcement units, arrestments in Edirne increased by 70 percent compared to the same period last year.
