The second stage / third meeting of the “Harmonization Meetings” was held in Trabzon on Monday 30 September 2019 by our General Directorate Harmonization and Communication Department in partnership with the German Agency for International Cooperation – GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH).
Trabzon Governor İsmail USTAOĞLU, KTU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hikmet ÖKSÜZ, our Deputy General Director Dr. Gökçe OK, our Harmonization and Communication Department President Dr. Aydın Keskin KADIOĞLU, GIZ Project Coordinator Kristina WILLEBRAND, our Trabzon Provincial Migration Management Director Ramazan LATİFOĞLU, along with representatives of the provincial protocol, representatives from non-governmental organizations and international students participated in the event of 22nd Harmonization Meeting conducted in Trabzon.
Trabzon Governor İsmail USTAOĞLU stated in his speech that Trabzon is a city of history, culture and civilization and said: “Today we are hosting about 16 thousand migrants in our province. Besides, we are hosting 1,800 students from different parts of the world. In order to share the history and natural beauties of our city, we host hundreds of thousands of tourists every year in peace and confidence. During this period, you will complete your schools in peace and confidence throughout your education life. You will be our representatives in the land you live.”
Vice Rector of KTU Prof. Dr. Hikmet ÖKSÜZ addressed to foreign students in his speech and said: “Please convey this great experience you will gain in Turkey and not only the experience of acquiring a profession, but also this humanity experience to all the people that you communicate with all your sincerity and common sense when you return to your country. This is perhaps the greatest burden, the greatest responsibility on humanity and on you, because in front of the eyes of the world, this nation is sharing its bread with the foreigners as much as the 5 percent of the population, struggling for life together. Nowhere in the world can you see this nobility and sacrifice.”
Deputy General Director Gökçe OK said: "Our struggle against irregular migration will continue, but with regular migration we will enrich our country's resources and make it an opportunity.” By providing information about regular and irregular migration our Deputy General Director OK said: “Unfortunately, the name of the migrants in Turkey have become 'Syrians'. Young people, this is a great injustice. I want to touch your heart, because if you can understand our issue, then you can explain it. In order to say ‘You are Great, Turkey’, express our voice and announce to the world, the only way is your hearts, your conscience. If young people claim this job, no bureaucrat, no mind, no politician can stand against it.”
Our Harmonization and Communication Department President Dr. Aydın Keskin KADIOĞLU emphasized that language is the most important element of harmony and said: “We all have to learn Turkish Language. Today, perhaps in modern sciences and universities, maybe you can consider how useful English is to you. But if we live in these lands, if we are going to maintain our lives in these lands, from job opportunities to social life area if we are going to express ourselves well and if we will be able to reach some goals and dreams with our own Turkish society, then please learn Turkish. Please show interest in Turkish language courses within the Ministry of National Education and other bodies of our government.”
GIZ Project Coordinator Kristina WILLEBRAND gave information about the activities GIZ carried out with the institutions of Turkey and the Lift Project in her speech. Emphasizing the importance of harmonization meetings, she stated that there will be 4 more meetings with the General Directorate of Migration Management.
Our Trabzon Migration Management Director Ramazan LATİFOĞLU said: “During the Harmonization Meetings, we will seek to raise awareness by informing our guests and university students about their rights and obligations and with our guest students we will look for ways to work on how we can support our brothers and sisters under international protection and temporary protection who are in need of further assistance as a social responsibility.
